Epic moments – such as the flight of a meteor across the Milky Way’s radiance or a kaleidoscopic frenzy of light animating the iconic Sydney Opera House – can slip by in a heartbeat. Under Clinton Harn’s magnificent time-lapse photography, such moments areas stunning as they are fleeting. And they make a fine point: Grasp the experience while youcan, because in a second it could all be gone. Most creative professionals understand that this is certainly the case with their data. Thousands of dollars and years of experience culminate in a few hours of shooting or recording. All it takes is an accidental drop, a lost bag or just everyday wear to kill a drive and all the irreplaceable information on it. Amateurs lose data. Professionals anticipate catastrophe and plan accordingly.
The G-Technology Difference
Perhaps coincidentally, Clinton Harn hasn’t had a drive fail in quite a while. Of course, it was more than two years ago that he began using G-Technology drives and making them a part of his regular workflow. By the time he started work on his jaw-dropping time lapse film Terra Australis, Harn was open to embracing the drive vendor more broadly. “When we started work on Terra Australis, I knew we were onto something special,” says Harn. “I had other drives to use, but my project partner, Phil [Arntz], said ‘No, let’s store it all on the G-Technology stuff.’ He was that confident in the brand and didn’t trust anything else as much for something this important. So I went out and bought a whole bunch more, and now I do everything off of my G-Technology drives. I have all these other branded drives sitting around here, and there isn’t anything wrong with them, but I know I won’t use them anymore.”
Was brand loyalty worth it in the end? Yes; ultimately, onlyone metric matters: whether there were any problems, and G-Technology drives haven’t tossed up a single hitch. In fact, Harn describes once having his gear bag run over by a truck while shooting a music video. His G-Technology drives and MacBook® Pro were in the bag. While the notebook resurfaced with a couple of dents, the drive emerged unscathed and fully functional.1 While Harn has every faith in G-Technology’s ruggedness and durability, he says, “do not try this at home” – he does not recommend dropping the drives or having them get run over by a truck.
As a rule, Harn shuns large gear setups, even on his desktop editing station. He’s a firm believer in maximizing portability, so that’s the concept that dominates his storage strategy. What works in his office should serve just as well on the road so his choice of drives is doubly important. He now uses G-Technology G-DRIVE® minis for general file storage. When it comes to editing, Harn switches to the G-RAID® mini for its high performance, light weight (just under a kilogram) and FireWire® 800-fueled throughput.
When on-set or working at a client’s site, Harn also uses G-Technology’s G-CONNECT®, a svelte, half-pound product that blends 500GB of hard drive storage with 802.11b/g/n wireless access functionality. With this, clients can download or stream rushes to up to five iPads® or other devices. The G-CONNECT affirms G-Technology’s dedication to making products that specifically cater to the needs of creative pros, helping them to do their work in a more effective, efficient manner.
Interestingly, Harn doesn’t have a larger-scale disk storage system in his office — a “tank” as some call it. He would rather dedicate his time and resources to production than archiving, and he’s confident that his G-RAID mini drives will keep his assets protected throughout his job cycles.
“My policy in how I serve clients is that I try not to store too much stuff. For example, I will keep a client’s material for three to four weeks. I stipulate in a written document that after that time, I get rid of it. That way I don’t have tons and tons of drives to archive stuff with. My whole workflow is built around: I do the edits, I get the product formatted and delivered, and it’s done. The only things I backup are some of my personal show reels or any footage that I want to keep for marketing purposes.”
Enabling the Next
Unlike many other professionals within the G-TEAM, Harn doesn’t hold religiously to a certain workflow. He works across photo, video and audio, and how he handles data within each of those areas varies. What remains consistent is that there is a lot of data to manage, the amount of data per job generally keeps increasing, and he relies on G-Technology gear.
Because of this, Harn looks forward to adopting faster, more flexible connection technologies – specifically the new G-DOCK ev™ with Thunderbolt™, which is part of G-Technology’s new Evolution Series. With Thunderbolt’s increased throughput, transfer rates will climb and Harn will be able to complete tasks faster. That part intrigues him, but it’s not enough on its own to sway a man who boasts about not adopting new technologies unless they fit his needs and work style.
No, the main reason Harn wants the new G-DOCK ev solution is his ability to use the small, lightweight external hard drive modules on the road with the ability to hand off to a DIT for copying.
“With the G-DOCK ev setup, I don’t have to bring cumbersome large drives on the set or to a job. I can now bring small little G-DRIVE® ev external hard drive modules. Then I can come back to base, dock them into the G-DOCK ev and do all my transfer stuff there. For me, that’s freedom and luxury.”
As with the G-RAID mini and G-CONNECT, Harn sees the Evolution Series as the latest example of how G-Technology listens to professionals like him and crafts the products they want. That, more than the ruggedness, performance, aesthetics, or anything else, is why Harn views G-Technology as “cutting edge.” He wants options within a brand line, but they have to be the right options delivered in the right way.
Harn says, “If I had to sum up G-Technology in one statement, it would be this: industry-grade drives made by professionals, for professionals. No other company in the storage industry can match that. It’s what makes G-Technology a no-brainer.”
