3 TB G-Drive stopped working after connecting to 2012 iMac

I have been using a 3 TB G drive as the Time Machine backup drive for a 2008 iMac without any problems. I just purchased a new 2012 iMac and have been unable to get the G-Drive to mount on the desktop. I am using and Apple Thunderbolt to FW 800 connector. The drive is reported as unreadable after several minutes of trying to mount. I am not given any choice to reformat the drive. It is now also unable to mount on my older iMac via direct FW 800 connection.

I would appreciate any advice that you can offer.
