It would only affect performance if the partition on the G-CONNECT was changed to GUID instead of MBR.

If you attach it via USB and check the Disk Utility you can see if it is GUID or MBR. If it has been switched to GUID then use the partition tab and the options button to make sure it stays MBR (Master Boot Record).
