Thanks for your post. The G-RAID does not require optimization or defragging. If you need to do something like that it is better to copy the data off the drive, erase the data, then copy the data back to the drive, which will effectively be defragged.

how can i back up my media from one drive to the next without creating duplicates if i already have some media backed up

If you are talking about backups so you mean Time Machine? If so then it automatically backs up only new and changed files, the rest are archived in an older backup that you can access whenever. But further information about Time Machine would need to be from Apple itself.
